2010 VPW Contest: Winners
Virginia Press Women’s 2010 communication contest honored 55 professional communicators at VPW’s spring conference, April 23rd in Roanoke. From a variety of categories, 201 awards were presented. First place winners will advance to the National Federation of Press Women contest, with winners to be announced in August.
Freelance writer Marty van Duyne of Falmouth won the Sweepstakes Award, with seven firsts, five seconds, five thirds, and four honorable mentions.

2010 VPW Contest: Deadline Jan. 6
Teresa Mannix and Diane Vogel, co-chairs for the VPW 2010 Communications Contest, have been busy lining up judges and getting out information about the contest to VPW members.
In order to be eligible, members must have paid 2009 NFPW dues. Dues for new members may be paid until the contest deadline date of Jan. 6, 2010. The entries package must be postmarked no later than Jan. 6, 2010, and no late entries will be accepted.
This competition offers a wonderful opportunity for members to submit their best work for special consideration, and there is a wide range of categories from which to choose.

2009 VPW Communications Contest Winners
National results: With 47 awards won by 28 VPW members, Virginia won the sweepstakes in the 2009 NFPW Communications Conference. Joan Tupponce was first runner-up for personal sweepstakes, new NFPW president Cynthia Price reported to Virginia members at the fall VPW conference in Richmond.
The national prize winners were Laura Beck, Pat Crepeau, Barbara Crookshanks, Laura Fortunato, Marie Hodge, Cathy Jett, Gail Kent, Dave Kohler, Teresa Mannix, Cara Ellen Modisett, Anne Marie Morgan, Lynn Nystrom, Tammy Poole, Cynthia Price, Donna Harter Raab, Kurt Rheinheimer, Louise C. Seals, Sande Snead, Pamela Stallsmith, Martha W. Steger, Marge Swayne, Susan Trulove, Joan Tupponce, Marty van Duyne, Linda White, Pat Wilson and Gwen Woolf.
Previously, VPW contest chair Teresa Mannix announced 196 awards to 47 professional communicators in the Virginia Press Women's 2009 Communication Contest.
Joan Tupponce, a free-lance writer based in Richmond, was awarded the sweepstakes plaque at the VPW Annual Spring Conference April 25 in Fredericksburg, Va. Her awards:

- First place, Personality Profile – more than 500 words
- First place, Special Articles – Arts and Entertainment

First-place entries are advanced to the national competition administered by the National Federation of Press Women, with winners announced at the annual NFPW conference set for Sept. 10–12 in San Antonio, Texas.

2008 NFPW Communications Contest
VPW members won 51 national awards in the 2008 National Federation of Press Women contest, according to an announcement June 26 by the NFPW.
First-place winners in the national contest are Clara Cox, Clissa England, Phaedra Hise, Cathy Jett, Gail Kent, Tana Lane Knott, Alberta Lindsey, Norma Lugar, Cara Ellen Modisett, Deborah Padgett, Norma Pierce, Cynthia Price, Janette Saviano, Louise Seals, Elizabeth Paradis Stern, Joan Tupponce and Linda White.
The National Federation of Press Women accepts only state first-place award entries in its competition, with national awards presented at the NFPW annual conference in September.

2008 VPW Communications Contest
A total of 68 professional communicators won an impressive 213 awards in the Virginia Press Women's 2008 Communication Contest. Winners were announced at the Virginia Press Women Annual Spring Conference on Saturday, March 29, in Staunton, Va. Joan Tupponce, editor and freelance writer from Glen Allen, earned the sweepstakes award.
Entries that received first place are advanced to the National Federation of Press Women contest, and the national results will be announced in September.
Judges were representatives from national media, including the Washington Post and National Public Radio. The 2008 contest was managed by long-time member Mary Ann Johnson of Blacksburg.
